Student Attendance
Parents are urged to see that their children are at school on a regular, on-time basis, not only for funding purposes, but more importantly for their child’s academic progress.
While we would like to have students in school every day, we understand that children cannot learn when they are not feeling well. If your child has a temperature or is sick, it is best to keep him/her at home.
When your child is absent, please call the school between 7:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. If a phone call is not possible, please send a dated and signed note, stating the reason for the absence, with your child when he/she returns to school.
Absences for illness and/or visits to a doctor or dentist as well as an absence due to a student’s attendance at a funeral for a parent, grandparent, brother, sister, sister or brother-in-law, or any other relative living in the student’s household are considered excused. Absences for any other reasons are considered unexcused and should be avoided if at all possible.
Saturday School
The Savanna School District has a Saturday School program aimed at assisting students in making up absences. Saturday School is available for any student wishing to make up an absence to qualify for perfect attendance or for students who have been habitually absent or tardy. Parents of students invited to Saturday School for excessive absences or tardies will be notified by letter. Students receiving such a letter are expected to attend Saturday School for the entire morning. Any other parent wishing to have his/her child attend Saturday School to make up absences should contact the school principal for the date and location of the next Saturday School session. All sessions meet from 8:00 a.m. to noon and students must be in attendance the entire 240 minutes to receive credit.
Independent Study
Independent study programs are available for children who will be absent from school five (5) or more days due to family vacations or other unexcused reasons. The school secretary or your child's classroom teacher can provide details for the processing of independent study programs.
